Taree is bounded by Old Port Macquarie Road, Stony Creek and the Taree Balance small area in the north, the Dawson River, the Manning River, Cubba Cubba Creek, Glenthorne Road and the Pacific Highway in the east, the Taree Balance small area in the south and The Bucketts Way, Ridge Road, Cotton Street, the Manning River, Munghi Creek, the Taree Balance small area and Cedar Party Road in the west. Taree is named from an Aboriginal word meaning 'wild fig fruit'.
