Rural North is bounded by the Queensland border in the north, Tweed Shire and the localities of Pumpenbil and Mebbin in the east, the localities of Upper Horseshore Creek and Green Pigeon, Fawcetts Creek, the locality of Kilgra, the Richmond River, the localities of Geneva, Eden Creek, Smiths Creek and Toonumbar in the south, and the localities of Upper Duck Creek, Brumby Plains, The Glen and Lindesay Creek in the west.
