Surf Coast Shire is between 75 and 125 kilometres south west of the Melbourne GPO, and between 12 and 60 kilometres south west of Geelong. The Shire encompasses a total land area of just over 1,550 square kilometres. It is bounded to the north by Golden Plains Shire, in the east by the City of Greater Geelong, in the west by Colac-Otway Shire and in the south by Bass Strait.
