Rural North East is bounded by Strathbogie Shire and Hughes Creek in the north, Murrindindi Shire in the east, the locality of Reedy Creek, Dabyminga Creek, the locality of Broadford, Sunday Creek and Tallarook-Pyalong Road in the south, and McGintys Road, the localities of Glenaroua and Tooborac, and the City of Greater Bendigo in the west. Rural North East includes the localities of Hilldene, Northwood, Puckapunyal, Tallarook, Trawool and Whiteheads Creek, and the Mitchell Shire parts of Avenel, Highlands, Mangalore and Tarcombe. Rural North East excludes the locality of Seymour.
