The 2017 population forecast for Upper Coastal is 1,476, and is forecast to grow to 2,035 by 2036.

Upper Coastal contains the townships of Lancelin and Ledge Point, and the localities of Karakin and Nilgen. Lower Coastal is bounded by the Shire of Dandaragan in the north, the localities of Orange Springs and Cowalla in the east, the locality of Breton Bay in the south and the Indian Ocean in the west.
